On Feb. 15, 2022, Mr. Ambassador, you wrote that the impending Russian invasion of Ukraine was “a charade,” adding, "Maybe I am wrong – tragically wrong – but I cannot dismiss the suspicion that we are witnessing an elaborate charade, grossly magnified by prominent elements of the American media, to serve a domestic political end.” Still a "charade"? Effing bloody, I’d say. Why should anyone now take you seriously, even considering your otherwise distinguished diplomatic career? What’s tragic is how far you and a few other prominent Russia apologists have strayed into an appeasement camp. And falling back on the Monroe Doctrine to rationalize Putin's invasion, not to mention his subversion and terrorizing of other states in its lost Soviet empire—wow, that’s pathetic. The argument of you and other Russia appeasers—sadly, I must say—seems to boil down to Putin was forced to invade Ukraine because a membership in NATO was entertained (but never seriously, much less put into official motion). In that, you evoke the image of the man who beats up or murders a woman and says “she made me do it.” Not that’s tragic, coming from you. (By the way, I was not the author of the piece you're complaining about, but I was proud to publish it.) v/r Jeff Stein
